Scammers seek unemployment benefits in other people's names

A scam involving unemployment benefits is hitting both statewide and locally.

Law enforcement and the state Department of Labor continue to investigate growing numbers of fraudulent unemployment claims as thousands returned to work this winter, officials said.

Officials at every level of government, including police, attorneys and state or local executives, have reported heightened numbers of fraudulent unemployment cases and are warning residents to remain vigilant against potential attacks. The cases often target New Yorkers involved in past data breaches.
It’s a situation area police agencies say has occurred locally — even at The Daily News and The Livingston County News.

It is with deep regret that Captain John J. Ryan, acting Troop “K” Commander, reports the passing of retired Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney, age 68, on March 6, 2021 after a lengthy and hard-fought battle with Leukemia and other 9-11 related illnesses.

After 2 years of service with NYPD, Sergeant Sweeney joined the Division on February 20, 1978 and retired on February 27, 2007.  He was last stationed at SP Wappinger.

Sergeant Sweeney is survived by his wife Noreen, daughters Elizabeth, Shannon and Katie, son Kevin and several grandchildren.

Due to COVID restrictions, arrangements have not yet been finalized but will follow in a separate message.
